Everyone asks me about the grip and release. Yes, it’s the foundation of the pitch, but a lot of your questions about the release would simply be answered by feeling the proper mechanics transfer the right amount of energy into the arm. Now, Charlie Hough always told me that he can mechanically take me all the way to the release but he couldn’t explain how it feels to throw a good one. But I think I can explain it pretty well, and I hope it takes your knuckleball to the next level.
Grip & Release
#1: Grip.
There are three rules that are set in stone for the release and there are three ways to customize your release. Here, I go over the grips of the greats and what all of the grips shared in common so that you can find the best grip for your body.
#2: Release.
Difficult to explain and impossible to write out in text. This is the longest and most in-depth video contained in Timmy, and it’s probably why you’re here. Enjoy.
#3: How the Ball Spins Locates Hand At Release.
If you spin the ball forward like a 12-6 curveball, then you’ve put your hand into the proper position to deliver an MLB-quality knuckleball. If the ball spins like a football, then you released it a little closer to your body than you want. And backwards spin is caused by letting the ball go near your head and body. You’ve got to get it out front.
